The central character of this book has no name. Almost forgotten by history she might have passed into obscurity, just another slave at the court of Herod the Great. But Loshema (no name) has a talent for storytelling. Hidden in the shadows she charts Herod’s rise from man to king, and from king to monster.

But Loshema is far from the usual kind of narrator. At times she talks directly to the reader, drawing them into the fascinating and dangerous world of Jerusalem over two millennia ago, a world populated with the great names of the time, Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Octavian …

As she reaches maturity, Loshema can no longer be a passive observer, but finds herself entangled with the highest levels of intrigue. And as paranoia begins to destroy Herod’s kingdom, she suddenly finds herself wielding power over who will live and who will die.

(This book is based on the accounts in Josephus, not the gospel of Matthew.)

“Many innocents will die before this story is over. Just not the ones you were expecting. And the son of God has less to fear in this world than the sons of man. But why waste time? We both know why you are here. You want to see the monster.”

Fancy having your name appear in a new Roman novel?https://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19694-fancy-having-your-name-appear-in-a-new-roman-novel/
My next book, entitled 'LEGIONARY: THE EMPEROR'S SHIELD' will be published soon (maybe the end of this year, or the start of 2023)!

Now.... how do you fancy having your name 'immortalised' in the manuscript? That's right, your name could be listed in the all new 'Claudian Roll of Honour', which will sit in the front matter (the first few pages) of the book, and remain there for all time! See the screenshot attached, which has a few familiar names from the series on there to start us off 😉

All you have to do is donate to my Myeloma UK blood cancer fundraiser at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/MyelomaHistory

For a donation of £𝟮𝟱 donation, you will get:
  • Your name listed in the 'Claudian Roll of Honour'

For a donation of £𝟱𝟬, you will get:
  • Your name listed in the 'Claudian Roll of Honour'
  • A copy of the eBook
  • A rather natty Legionary-branded gift (details forthcoming)
  • A Legionary bookmark

For a donation of £𝟳𝟱, you will get:
  • All of the above
  • Plus a 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗱, 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 & 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸!

Just post a reply to this topic to let me know you've donated, or drop me a line at www.gordondoherty.co.uk/contact-me

If you're in the UK, I'll cover postage. If you're overseas, I'll ask you to cover shipping.

There is limited space for twenty names on the roll of honour, perhaps thirty at a push.
So let's see if we can swell the ranks! Come on, Pavo and Sura are looking a bit lonely there 😁

And if you're unfamiliar with the Legionary series... where have you been?!? 😄
Find out all about it here: https://www.gordondoherty.co.uk/legionary.html

Stolen Roman bust found in Goodwill shophttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19644-stolen-roman-bust-found-in-goodwill-shop/ 7FAAEA3F-47F1-40CD-B245-CE58B7265CFE.thumb.jpeg.07d3f4ec511a3283057992e0ef0631b2.jpeg
This undated photo shows a marble bust that a Texas woman bought for about $35 from a Goodwill store that is temporarily on display at a San Antonio museum after experts determined it was a centuries-old sculpture missing from Germany since World War II. The bust, which art collector Laura Young found at Goodwill in 2018, once belonged in the collection of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, according to the San Antonio Museum of Art, which is temporarily displaying the piece until it is returned to Germany next year. (San Antonio Museum of Art via AP) (San Antonio Museum of Art)

A stolen early Roman bust was purchased for $34.99 at an Austin Goodwill thrift shop. It is suspected to be the image of either Drusus Germanicus or Sextus Pompey, son of Pompey the Great.

EID MAR aureus for salehttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19451-eid-mar-aureus-for-sale/ 51F30670-0C4B-41C1-8FC0-D7CF8C5EFAA3.thumb.jpeg.35b9282d6c83071daec3fe9dca298e6d.jpeg

The famous EID MAR aureus, which was on loan to the British museum for more than a decade, has come up for auction. (We had a thread on this coin from 2010. See below.) It is estimated to fetch more than US$2 million dollars:

Quote

One side of the coin shows an inscription that reads “EID MAR” short for Eidibus Martiis, the Ides of March, along with two daggers and a liberty cap symbolizing the fight for freedom. The other side of the coin features a portrait of Brutus with the inscription “BRVT IMP” or Brutus, Imperator.

The coin has a tiny hole in it just above the head of Brutus. It is believed that it could have been worn by a high-ranking supporter and perhaps even one of the conspirators of Caesar’s murder.

Julia Domna coin: Fabulous and accurate depictionhttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19413-julia-domna-coin-fabulous-and-accurate-depiction/ Julia Domna was the wife of Septimius Severus and mother to Geta and Caracalla. Part of her image was the beautiful and intricate hair style. Here is a beautiful gold coin of Julia Domna that recently sold in auction.

A Roman Empire Julia Domna, AD 193-217 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients MS★, 5/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 64) realized CHF 204,000 (about $223,800). The coin features a portrait of Julia Domna, who was Roman empress as the wife of Emperor Septimus Severus. The result far exceeded the pre-auction estimate of CHF 120,000 (about $131,600).”

This coin is a wonderful representation of Julia Domna, similar to the ancient statues and the Severan Tondo with her image:

Small museum seeking local Celtic coin hoardhttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19283-small-museum-seeking-local-celtic-coin-hoard/ A7A98238-73B1-4E7E-84A5-379BC70CC817.thumb.jpeg.6e3c30bb6e93f01fd31c5a34b81df227.jpeg

St. Barbe Museum in Lymington, England hopes to raise enough money to keep a recent Celtic coin hoard at the local museum.

The unique, 2,000-year-old cache of 269 Celtic coins contains some that are thought to have never been seen before by historians.

It is considered to be so important that Lymington’s St Barbe Museum has launched a fundraising appeal – dubbed the Celtic Countdown – to ensure it stays close to where it was discovered and available for local people to study.

The three amateur metal detection enthusiasts used Google Earth to focus their searches.

Quote

The three began searching the site after seeing a 25m (82ft) circle in the ground on Google Earth which they suspected was a sign of a Celtic dwelling. Mr Layman, who had only been metal detecting for six months, said: "Persistence is the secret of success - but a hoard is a detectorist's dream.”

TV historian Dan Snow has now joined the challenge of helping to raise £7,500 towards the cost of securing the treasure trove from the metal detectorists who discovered it and the owner of the land where it was found.

The Hamilton Aphrodite was last spotted at auction seventy years ago. Rendered in either the 1st or 2nd century AD, the Roman Imperial marble sculpture of the famous goddess of love is also thought to be the first piece of ancient sculpture ever to take up residence in Scotland. It was purchased in 1776 by the 8th Duke of Hamilton in Scotland, and the statue sat in Hamilton palace for 144 years. Now, it’s estimated that the sculpture will sell for between £2,000,000 and £3,000,000.”

Towering at 187 cm [six feet, one inch] from the top of her ancient base, this nude statue of the goddess of love stands as one of the most important antiquities ever shipped from Italy to Britain during the golden age of Grand Tour collecting, on a par with the British Museum’s Townley Venus and the Barberini (aka Jenkins) Venus.”

An interesting auction is coming:

Quote

Incredible Marcus Aurelius bust is among a treasure trove of 2,000-year-old Roman bronze artefacts dug up by metal detectorists in Yorkshire and tipped to sell for £100,000 at auction

Two metal detectorists found the collection in a field in Ryedale, North Yorkshire

It also includes the handle of a knife and a plumb-bob, used in construction

The well preserved hoard will be sold May 20 with pre-sale estimate of £90,000

Animated GIF

The items were buried in a field in Ryedale, North Yorks, as an offering to the gods as part of a Roman religious ceremony in about AD 160

The plumb bob - a pointed weight which is suspended from string to show what is exactly vertical - that is part of the North Yorkshire hoard

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-9495133/Roman-artefacts-dug-detectorists-tipped-sell-100-000.html

Summary: Hopefully, it can be purchased by a museum or foundation that will have the items on display.

Book on Catiline Conspiracyhttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/18782-book-on-catiline-conspiracy/ I have just published a book called "The Fall of the Republic" on the Catiline Conspiracy.  While it is fictional, it adheres closely to Sallust's account and other historical sources.  Here is a summary:

In 63 B.C., Catiline—an angry, corrupt politician—conspired with foreign powers and criminal elements to overthrow the Roman Republic. Exploiting those who suffered from inequality, he sought to destroy the republic in the name of the people. In the end, he nearly achieved through violence what he could not attain by inciting the masses with lies. This true story of the near-destruction of a great republic contains poignant lessons for the ages.

"The Fall of the Republic" is available on Amazon, in both paperback and Kindle editions. Use the link below or search for my name. I hope that you enjoy it!

History Revealed: Ben Kane Articlehttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/18655-history-revealed-ben-kane-article/ Author and UNRV contributor Ben Kane wrote a very nice article in the September 2018 issue of  "History Revealed" magazine entitled "Empires at War: Rome vs Greece: How the Ancient World was Rocked by a Clash of Superpowers in 197 BC."

1895490383_Historyrevealed.jpg.80e98e58d39492a64930c8f3c4bbbfb3.jpg

This article examines the background history of tensions and eventual conflict between Macedon and the Roman Republic. Mr. Kane also examines the rivalry between Philip V of Macedon and the vainglorious Roman general Titus Quinctius Flamininus.

Despite the fact that "History Revealed" is not a scholarly publication, many articles are informative and richly illustrated. Mr. Kane's article is no exception.

This article has some enjoyable and succinct insights:  "When the Second Punic War started in 218 BC, the Roman Republic was one of the smallest of the five major powers around the Mediterranean. Half a century later, the situation had changed beyond recognition. Just two factions remained: weak and unstable Ptolemaic Egypt and the ascendant Roman Republic. Remarkably, the three that had fallen -- Carthage, Macedon and the Seleucid Empire -- had all been beaten by Rome in War."

Recommend highly.

Addendum:

As mentioned in the article, Flamininus stuck gold staters with his portrait and his name. He was the first Roman in history to mint coins with his own portrait as "it showed aspirations toward kingship."
