The guy owned a waterfront bar. His Sanitation Dept. customers would give him all sorts of things that people threw away, so he made a 'museum' out of the stuff and now drinks Budweisser with his pals. If a stranger is a good boy, he gets offered a brew. Since we all are Hookers, we are now pals. Compliments of Antiochus.

The dialects are probably not quite as different as that. I imagine it as something like a Scot negotiating with an Alabaman ... Assuming that an alabamian has the wits to get up in the morning. More seriously, and off topic, I understand that years ago when linguists wanted to hear what Elizabethan English sounded like, they went to Appalachia.(?)

The Imperial Roman Intelligence Service (IRIS) informs me that Onasander will be back from Iraq in December, when he will re-commence activities on the Forum. If he was cranky and a pain in the past, he will try to be a lot more so. He will no longer buck any nonsense at all. His English has declined as his Arabic has inclined. That's what happens when one goes from the icebergs of Alaska to the sand dunes of Mesopotamia. Your Intelligencer,

I recently read or heard that Ivan the Terrible built a secret library within the Kremlin. It was alleged to possibly contain 'Byzantine' manuscripts. Are the Russians doing any work on this?

Are there any Carthaginian documents extant?

If my memory serves, the legions' 'grunts' had to be able to read and write. If this is so, how were they thus educated?

"Military Channel - 9:00 am Next showing: The Claw Greek genius Archimedes creates a secret weapon that plucks Roman warships from the sea." (From the G-Man) Considering the weight of a warship, or any ship for the matter, was it really possible for the claw to lift a ship out of the water?

Those attributes could apply to Constantine XI as well. They could even apply to Mehmed, "Kayser-i Rum" (The above by Maladict.) This, for me, is an interesting point. I am sure that I will need much correcting on the following: I assume he means Mehmed II Fatih. Prior to the conquest of the Queen of Cities, didn't the Turks call Anatolia 'Rum', their version of 'Rome'? Doesn't the word 'Istanbul' have Latin roots, something like 'Constantine's City'? Didn't Mehmed consider himself successor to the Caesars of old? Didn't he adopt much Roman legislation (law) for his own realm?

In re 'Greek Fire': What did the Romans call it? Were their ships armed port, starboard, fore, and aft with these 'guns'? Did the infantry and cavalry use the 'grenades'? Did they use 'land mines'? Were these weapons used in 1453 to defend the walls of Constantinople? If not, why not?

At one time, the Romans used dogs (Present day Neapolitan Mastiffs?) to commence an attack. When and where? And why were they given up?

N.N., might this have anything to do with the limitaneii coming from other parts of the Empire?

Congrats to Faustus, Kosmo and GPM (Even if his isn't recent.). Well deserved lads!

That side view of the P-38 doesn't give a youngster a full idea of the glory of the plane. Perhaps it should be a 'tilted' view. Side on, it looks like any ole fighter. Just an idea, and hopefully none take it as an insult. Edit: Huns and nips were not only fascinated, but also incinerated.

I love the smell of firewood in the morning
Gaius Octavius commented on docoflove1974's blog entry in The Language of Love
Were I you, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Look, soon you will have a quake, and kali4kneeya will slip into the drink. Fire done for. Now, lest you think that I am picking on the state, Lon Guylan is slowly slipping into Davy Jones' Locker. The sooner the better. Solve all sorts of problems. -

Hopefully, you will also put this up the next time Roman "Democratic' institutions are mentioned. -

A couple of y'all are aware of the fact that I took a hit in the Imperial Portfolio. I am trying to make up this short fall with a Black Sale of my monograph: "On the Rudiments of Elementary Bad Manners"; a necessity for those lacking in the matter. It is offered at the previously unheard of pre-certified pre-discounted discounted price of 69 bucks. (Plus taxes and S&H.) But wait! Order one and you'll get two! Give one to a needy friend. You'll also get a C-note rebate!

Perfect! But I won't. Oh!, what the heck. Everybody now, in Church Latin: 'Little Indian, Sioux or Crow, Little Turk or Japanee. O! don't you wish that you were A Napolitano, Just like me?' 'A Child's Garden of Verses' (Edited).
