Our previous forum software reached its "end of life", so I had to make a decision either to shut it down or invest money and upgrade it to the newest version.

Even though the forum discussion slowed down considerably over the years, i still believe there is more than enough interesting content and still enough contributors that it deserves to live on in a fresh and secure environment.

So here it is the newest version of our forum software. I appreciate if you guys check it for any bugs and little errors so I can forward it to the developers to iron any bugs out you might encounter!

Thanks!

Significance of Avatar/ Profile Namehttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/11634-significance-of-avatar-profile-name/Lots of you have Profile names that remain an enigma to me. I'd love you to explain them. Even if the meaning of the name is apparent (like a historical character), there's probably an interesting reason why you chose that particular character. And also, just becasue that character is well known to you, doesn't mean I (or others on UNRV) know anything about them.

Please enlighten us all. We'd love to know.

I will start the ball rolling.

Some of you may know that my area of expertise (I love pretending) is Hadrian's Wall, and a few years ago I discovered Augustus Ceasar's "Hadrian's Wall" website, and its forum. I wanted to ask a question, so I registered, calling myself 'Centurion'. Now all I needed was an avatar.

One of the little lectures I give my clients on the Hadrian's Wall tour is all about a 19th Century antiquarian by the name of John Clayton, who is responsible for much of the preservation of Hadrian's Wall. My avatar is from a painting of a Centurion supervising construction work on Hadrian's Wall and (nice touch this) the artist has painted the centurion with John Clayton's face. I chose this avatar as the first image of a Centurion that came to mind.

A short while later, I joined UNRV and, to my peevement, found that 'Centurion' was already taken. I already had the avatar with John Clayton's face. Hence, Ghost of Clayton.

QED.

Your turn.

avatar questionshttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/12177-avatar-questions/Unbelievable, Why am I forced to have to post 5 post's just in order to have a avatar?!? and then I can't post at all until the 16th once 2 more post are used up. How ridiculous and gay, it sounds like the person in charge of this forum is a narcissistic sociopath. He probably didn't even earn the most highest position in this forum and can have everything he wants and control who ever he wants here as well as probably many others who shares a portion or little pieces of his power. The Roman Republic was supposed to be a republic but probably never was, not a certain dictatorship or hierarchy unless a republic is a hierarchy. It reminds me of the noble lie Plato brings up in his fantasized republic. Plato wrote the republic which was an attempt "by him" to prove how false and dangerous the city-state is. If this forum was not run by a dictator, then the problem of uploading a avatar and having all the features for all members would no longer be an issue and everyone would be free of the administrators tyrannical reign.

So will the dictator let me have access to getting a avatar, all the features and let me post as much as I want without the dictator reviewing every single post I make especially if I am not braking any rules? It's only a forum after all and If you don't let me have access to all the features then I will leave this site and just post what I wanted to post elsewhere

UNRV Site Ownership Changehttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/18589-unrv-site-ownership-change/ Hello Everyone

As many of you will probably have read by now, either on the the Forum or through the newsletter, ownership and running of the site has now passed to me.

Just to introduce myself, my name is Peter Kay (for those of you aware of an English comedian with the same name...it's not him. Sorry to disappoint). I work as a website manager for a company and have a big interest in history, particularly the ancient Roman period.

My aim is to build upon the hard work done by Viggen over the last 14 years and to build UNRV into an even bigger resource and online community.

As you might have noticed, we now have a new home page (you may need to clear your browsing history and then refresh the page if it's not displaying properly). It's not 100% the final version, as things like the top menu navigation will change, and the "Gladiators" box will change to "Entertainment" in the future, but a large amount of my time is going towards getting 14 years' worth of content into the new format and into categories, so more will go on the home page eventually, but at least the new home page design is up and online.

I know the Forum is at the heart of the site, and the last thing i want to do is create a website which has lots of pages but no interaction, so i'm hoping the Forum can be expanded and developed to get more conversations flowing.

If anyone has any questions, ideas for new content, or simply to say hi, please either post on the forum or if it's something you'd like to discuss privately please send an e-mail to admin@unrv.com

It does feel like quite a challenge taking on a site with such a large amount of content and so many visitors, so please bear with me during this transition period whilst I get to grips with the site. If you can read this then at least i've worked out how to successfully write a post for the Forum!

Finally, unlike many transfers of power in Ancient Rome, this one was peaceful and Viggen is thankfully still with us... unless he causes trouble and the Praetorian Guards need to be called :) I'm sure you'll all agree he did a wonderful job over the last 14 years building the site into what it is today and hopefully I, with your help, can take it on to the next level.

Peter

Time to let go.... Goodbye and hellohttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/18587-time-to-let-go-goodbye-and-hello/ Hello everyone,

UNRV has be a part of my life since far beyond 2003 when it officially launched, so to say goodbye is not easy believe me. I struggled the last couple of years with health issues, work and a busy life thanks to my two children born in 2012 and 2015. Time was in the last years always an issue for me, i never had enough time to do the things i wanted to do and eventually there is a point where it is better to find someone who has the time and is able to make hopefully more out of UNRV than i was able to do the last few years...

I am giving the site and all that comes with it to Peter Kay who lives in the UK is a professional website manager for a company and has a big interest in history particularly the ancient Roman period.

I will stick around of course and will assist Peter as much as i can, none of your already submitted reviews are lost and will eventually be published.

It feels weird for the first time ever not be the emperor here anymore :) but how did they sing in Frozen... Let it go......

Feel free to get in contact with me via this forum or viggen@gmail.com

Ladies and Gentlemen, it has been an honor to serve you....!

Question about the Maphttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/16067-question-about-the-map/Ave!

I came across this site through a Google search for a good wall map of the Roman Empire. The one offered for sale by UNRV looks incredible, easily the best one out there- my query is, are these maps still available? I don't really want to drop $49 on something that might not even be around anymore.

If this is the wrong place to post this, I apologize.

No more ads (How to support UNRV)https://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/18416-no-more-ads-how-to-support-unrv/We want to make UNRV an ad free website and still be able to keep on supporting authors and reviewers! Two ways you can help, either with a few dollars than go --> HERE  (including a more detailed explanation what we try to achive) or you can click via our Amazon affiliate links when you want to purchase anyway something from Amazon. We get a few percent commission and for you nothing changes at all. It really can add up, so thanks already in advance.

If you purchase from Amazon in the USA --> click HERE and continue shopping on Amazon as usual
If you purchase from Amazon in the UK   --> click HERE and continue shopping on Amazon as usual

If you do not shop on the US or UK store or at Amazon alltogether consider donating a dollar or two

---in this thread i post the progress on how it goes in getting rid of ads while still providing for reviewers and authors----

Happy New Year!https://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/17990-happy-new-year/Thanks to the dictatorial decrees of Caesar and the introduction of the Julian Calendar circa 45 BC, the western world has today celebrated the beginning of the year on January 1. Though those crazy Catholics tried to ban the paganistic celebrations of January 1 in the middle ages, good old Pope Gregor gave it back to us with his calendar in 1582. smile.gif

Just imagine how confused we would be if December was actually still the 10th month and March was the beginning of the year. tongue.gif

At any rate, we'd like to thank all of our active members of this forum for making this a great destination for Romanophiles everywhere. Cheers and many happy returns!

Vale MMXIV, Salve MMXV!

Suggestion on shipping the maphttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/17813-suggestion-on-shipping-the-map/I recieved my roman map yesterday. I really love the map and don't have any regrets getting it, but I do think the way the map is packaged needs to be changed. When I got my map the cardboard tube was damaged and one of the plastic lids was gone thus exposing the map. The map it self was then damaged. Not too badly though. There is white marks from where the map was bent from the tube getting ruffed up. Thankfully the white marks are mostly in the seas and not interfering with any information that is on the map. I believe a plastic tube would be more sturdy then the cardboard one.

Like I said I don't regret getting the map and intend on getting it framed and putting it in my living room. I love it a lot and it's going to come very handy durning my studies in school.

Could use a little mod help . . .https://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/17940-could-use-a-little-mod-help/I would like to set the cover of my novel as my profile picture, but I get a notification that it exceeds the size limit.

Is there a way to fix that?  Here is the picture I want to use:

Well, never mind.  For some reason I cannot paste a link to my photobucket page.  I guess I'll just be an unseen entity . . .
