Colosseum Latest Topicshttps://www.unrv.com/forum/forum/10-colosseum/Colosseum Latest TopicsenNotable videos of Roman mischttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19852-notable-videos-of-roman-misc/ I see various good quality videos that don't seem to justify their own topic or fit existing ones and may just have a loose connection to ancient Rome. Felt wrong to not post them, so here is a misc assortment topic for them. Hopefully you have already been subscribed to these folks though.

I always felt bad about a quirky thing causing me to skip seeing the Vettii villa just before it closing for umpteen years of restoral. Now I can feel more at peace since I see I hate Roman painting aesthetic right to the core: lurid and cluttered. Same applies even to Nero's house where I just missed seeing it's opening; it's more tasteful colors don't redeem the childish scrawl. Architecture and sculpture is where ancient Rome excels for me.

The above aerial tour of Rome should not be seen as focused on the ugly typewriter monument, but views FROM it. I was too cheap to pay for entrance when it first opened, and now see it to be like the only skyscraper in Paris; when you are on top of it you see everything except the eyesore itself. This Roman site tour guy is doing more and more with drones and artful music. Of many roof gardens, one that goes by too fast is over the top. It may start up in lower res, but can run in 4k. Would make a nice loop to play continuously on an idle TV?

List Version: Favorite Archeo. Tour Videoshttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19385-list-version-favorite-archeo-tour-videos/ Here I repost a list of videos in a more streamlined form and maybe in a more proper place than https://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19211-favorite-archeo-tours-by-video/. It is supposed to show a favorite video per Roman archeological site, hopefully intros with a bit of sparkle that will entice folks to go into more depth. Sorry I over represented Pompeii, but feel free to post more in either location.

I Claudius - but not the one you knowhttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19998-i-claudius-but-not-the-one-you-know/ This one's an oddity. A series of clips from footage recorded for the original 1937 film version of I Claudius that was never finished. Alex Korda was taking on Hollywood with some success and wanted a Roman epic, so he approached Robert Graves, but the film was very expensive and personality conflicts doomed the production.

The Way of the Windhttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19764-the-way-of-the-wind/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Way_of_the_Wind

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10937004/

Quote

The Way of the Wind[2] is an upcoming epic biblical drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick and produced by Josh Jeter. Starring Géza Röhrig as Jesus, the film retells his story. Alongside Rohrig, Mark Rylance stars as Satan, Matthias Schoenaerts as Saint Peter while Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes, Tawfeek Barhom, Douglas Booth, and Aidan Turner star in supporting roles.

Looks like a good cast and an interesting biblical interpretation. Has anybody watched it yet?

Colosseum TV series doesn't suck?!https://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19658-colosseum-tv-series-doesnt-suck/ I had ignored the history channel new Colosseum series as not likely worthy, but some channel surfing indicates it may be pretty good. It even looks like you can stream episodes after a while for free at https://www.history.com/shows/colosseum . Where is that old forum spirit of critiquing popular media representations of Rome?

I can understand avoiding TV due to spewage of woke commercials, but use that fast forward button. They even revive having real expert commentators instead of the trend towards slangy pierced woke figureheads mouthing scripts they don't understand. I'm a little embarrassed about Romans love of such games and would prefer to follow their more popular horseracing,  but this series apparently redeems itself with wider context.

Favorite Roman Museum Videos?https://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19398-favorite-roman-museum-videos/ What are your favorite videos for museums of ancient Rome? I love the Roman sculpture in these places, especially depictions of real people usually in meditative poses. Scholars warn us that the identity of such sculptures is fairly speculative, and may even have been re-sculpted to change identities over the ages. Note the first video has already been posted under my archeological site thread because it is both site and museum (a great uncrowded one near Rome train station):

“The 1962 Rudolf Maté film depicts the three-day long Battle of Thermopylae, which was fought between an alliance of ancient Greek city-states and Persian invaders. “The 300 Spartans” was made with cooperation from the Greek government, and therefore was filmed in the Peloponnese, southern Greece. The comic book which inspired the aforementioned flick “300” (2006) would not have existed if it wasn’t for The 300 Spartans. The graphic novel was written by Frank Miller, who watched the 1962 movie as a child and felt compelled to make his own art based on it.“

I will have to check out a few of these movies:

Emperor, Imperatorhttps://www.unrv.com/forum/topic/19093-emperor-imperator/ Hi. Stumbled across this film on YouTube this evening. Made in 2014 on a low budget by Polish students it tells the tale of how Otho began his move toward displacing Galba in ad69. IT plays a bit fast and loose with history, principally concerning Poppea Sabina (You'll soon find out why). Nonetheless although technically a 'C' movie the production standards are high, the acting passable, and there's more than a little hint of Gladiator about it. The film is in Latin with Polish and English subtitles.
