FLIGHT DECK

-

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING - DOES THE EARTH’S ROTATION AFFECT THE DURATION OF FLIGHT?

No.....that is not me. :)

Q: At what angle do you land?
Chris Gardner St. John’s
Major airports around the world use an ILS (instrument landing system) to guide aircraft vertically on a glideslope, generally at a standard angle of three degrees. I realize many people think it’s much steeper than this, especially when watching aircraft on final approach. Visual approach lights, which turn red if we are too low or white if we’re too high, also guide aircraft at three degrees. During the initial climb after takeoff, the deck angle can easily be from 12 to 20 degrees.
Q: What is a flight level?
Carter Winsor
Oakville, Ontario
A flight level (FL) is our height above sea level (ASL) measured in hundreds of feet. Yes, we still use feet, except over places like China, where metres are used. So FL 350 means 35,000 feet ASL. Flight levels are based on pilots setting their altimeters (which display altitude) to a standard pressure setting. The transition altitude – the altitude at which we shift from the local pressure setting to a standard pressure – occurs over Canada and the U.S. at 18,000 feet. It can be as low as 3,000 feet in some countries.
Q: Does the Earth’s rotation affect the duration of flight?
Glenn Melnychuk
St. Albert, Alberta
The Earth’s rotation does not affect travel time. When a child tosses a ball up and down in a train moving at 100 kilometres an hour, the ball is not displaced because of the train’s motion. Similarly, aircraft fly in an atmosphere that moves with the Earth. What affects the duration of flight are winds. They can be very strong and generally blow from the west in Canadian latitudes. In fact, westerly winds can be so strong that the duration of a transcontinental flight from Vancouver to Toronto can be about 30 minutes less than a flight from Toronto to Vancouver.

wonder how ATC works for Ballons that close.....yell at each other?!?! LOL.

Great pics!

Great questions in Enroute too.

Thanks for the answer about the coffin corner. When I read fuel burn I had a brain fart moment. Thanks for straigtening me out. Which leads me to ask, if you were riding the tops in moderate to severe bumps, topped at FL350 and you got into a situation with a very tight corner and lower was no good due to weather, would you dump fuel to drop weight if it was bad enough?

RE: Does the Earth's rotation affect the duration of flight.

First of all, great blog Captain!

Everything you said about inertial reference frames (the train) is true, but the fact that winds prevail from the West at Canadian latitudes is due to Coriolis force. And Coriolis acceleration is a result of the Earth's rotation.

So we can conclude that the Earth's rotation does affect the duration of flight!

Captain Doug said...

Leisuresuitwally.

Welcome and thanks. You make a great point, because Coriolis force affects winds and winds affect flight then yes, the earth's rotation DOES affect flight...indirectly. I knew someone would bring up the Coriolis effect. :)))

As you know, the question pertained to the earth rotating during flight. Many think because the earth is rotating under them, then flights
should be shorter or longer because of it. Not so.

Thanks for the visit.

Oh Captain Doug, we already know that's not you in the cockpit picture....that pilot has a nice "Watch" on.....

I'll let it go eventually....you know it's all in fun..and I am joking....maybe your not having fun.....who's fault is that....LOL

Captain Doug said...

Getjets. You don't miss a thing...my comments, my pics and my double meanings.
Do you have some sort of inside info or is it that powerful woman intuition stuff? LOL

Like the pilot joke. :)
Here's another one..."what's the difference between God and a pilot?....God doesn't think he is a pilot." LOL

Thanks for your "lively" check in.

I suspect you have more than me smiling.

Captain Doug with a funny watch strap. :)))

CAT III Approach. Unfortunately, the "little" buses do not have fuel jettison capability. That's just for the BIG boys.

Captain Doug said...

CAT III Approach. Good point about the runways. :)))

There sure was lots going on with runway 24 Right while we were running. But I was panting so hard
I couldn't concentrate on what was going on. LOL

Captain Doug said...

Cedarglen. Got the pics. Maybe a post is in order? :))

Captain Doug said...

BAS. Yes, I agree that pic was neat with all those balloons!

I went up in one in France when I was a couple of years older than you.

The ballon was tethered, but I will always remember the heat from the burners.

I should have stayed in Europe. LOL

Maybe I'll take a "leave" to learn french and drink cheap wine?

Actually, we are hiring big time so leaves are not being granted. Pity!

getjets said...

Your Welcome Captain....

NOPE...no "inside info"...besides I don't trust that stuff anyway....

and YEP it's all Powerful Woman's Intuition....a natural talent...
and my gift of (sometimes) humor....(due to a traumatic childhood)lol, sorta

which is a "single edge sword"...pointed in the wrong direction....usually...by my own hand....oh and the Big mouth came at no extra charge...

At least my cholestrol is low....due to rapid heartbeat(always in trouble....ha )so I die old...Yippie....
but with no friends....

I drink cheap wine....you don't have to move to France......

your joke was a good one....
besides humiliation is 'under rated'....gotta go now....

ps
CAT III, Hope your getting some rest.....doesn't hurt to have those extra set of eyes....watching over the Captain....ha ha

lastly..Captain Doug,

There was indeed a lot happening on 24R during the Runway Run. She Who Must Be Obeyed and I got so distracted watching the steady stream of Airbuses, CRJs, Dash 8s and Embraers coming and going ... we actually stopped several times to take photos! Race? What race?

Perhaps it was enhanced by the cheap French wine we had the night before?

Foggy!!! :) :)

Oh! How wonderful!! ((hugs))

Wishing you the best...always!

Captain Doug said...

Anon. I'll be posting a "want ad" later today.

If you read his blog you know what I'm talking about. :)

Captain Doug said...

Craig R. Cheap red wine and airplanes...what else is there? Really! LOL

Yeah, I can think of another....food!

Okay, okay I can think of another, but that's a couple of blogs over. :)))

Anonymous said...

I had read it. :(

That "Want Ad" is a good idea.

Crossing fingers...and again--"Hi Foggy!"

I like putting faces to names. :)

Captain Doug said...

Daniel. I saw you guys had a severe thunderstorm warning in effect. Kind of rare for you Halagonians. :)

Actually, we do have texting capability on the overseas flights. It's called CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Services).

But on the domestic side it's VHF all the way.

You should work for some innovative aviation think tank. :)))

getjets said...

Hello Mr. Foggy!!!! I just love the picture and the pose....perfect!!! you are as I pictured you.....and that is a good thing:)))))

Captain Doug,,you mentioned a couple of "blogs over...." one could retrieve information on the best things in life......

Serious Note:

Did you hear they found a piece of the space shuttle "COLUMBIA"....that(burned up on re entry Feb 1, 2003)...
anyway it's a 4 foot section that provided water and power to the shuttle...(PRSD)

found in East Texas....because of the drought there.... the lake water had receded exposing the piece was found a day or two ago....NASA has confirmed...makes ya wonder what else.....may be....

PS,

Craig R....I hope you will post a couple of those runway pics of jets on your blog....love to see them....

MR CAT III....are you an ATC???. you don't have to answer....

^j^

Captain Doug said...

Getjets.

Good luck with #4. I only wish others were adamant as you in fulfilling their "to do" list. LOL

Yes, I saw a newspaper clip about the exposed Shuttle section. Interesting stuff...but not as interesting as #4.

Best of luck with that "to do" list.

And yes I noticed the nice watch "Foggy" is wearing.

Captain Doug now googling for that "other" blog. LOL

getjets said...

Hey there Captain...quit your googling....

#4 is really #1....in sheeps clothing....lol

but I don't even claim to know what I'm talking about.....

Captain Doug said...

Getjets

I thought having #2 with #3 while talking about #1 will get you lots of #4 thus indirectly getting plenty of #5.

You see....I'm confused. No wonder #4 has been so illusive for me.

Speaking of which, I sure hope "number one" doesn't read this. LOL

Captain Doug and Getjets,

I may convince my F/O to go to the "Flying Beaver. It's a restaurant/bar co-located at a very busy float plane operation.

So there will be food, drink, planes and afterward plenty of rest. But as far as #4... think about the name... The flying "Beaver" .....LOL
