THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING - DOES THE EARTH’S ROTATION AFFECT THE DURATION OF FLIGHT?
|No.....that is not me. :)|
Q: At what angle do you land?
Chris Gardner St. John’s
Chris Gardner St. John’s
Major airports around the world use an ILS (instrument landing system) to guide aircraft vertically on a glideslope, generally at a standard angle of three degrees. I realize many people think it’s much steeper than this, especially when watching aircraft on final approach. Visual approach lights, which turn red if we are too low or white if we’re too high, also guide aircraft at three degrees. During the initial climb after takeoff, the deck angle can easily be from 12 to 20 degrees.
Q: What is a flight level?
A flight level (FL) is our height above sea level (ASL) measured in hundreds of feet. Yes, we still use feet, except over places like China, where metres are used. So FL 350 means 35,000 feet ASL. Flight levels are based on pilots setting their altimeters (which display altitude) to a standard pressure setting. The transition altitude – the altitude at which we shift from the local pressure setting to a standard pressure – occurs over Canada and the U.S. at 18,000 feet. It can be as low as 3,000 feet in some countries.
Q: Does the Earth’s rotation affect the duration of flight?
St. Albert, Alberta
St. Albert, Alberta
The Earth’s rotation does not affect travel time. When a child tosses a ball up and down in a train moving at 100 kilometres an hour, the ball is not displaced because of the train’s motion. Similarly, aircraft fly in an atmosphere that moves with the Earth. What affects the duration of flight are winds. They can be very strong and generally blow from the west in Canadian latitudes. In fact, westerly winds can be so strong that the duration of a transcontinental flight from Vancouver to Toronto can be about 30 minutes less than a flight from Toronto to Vancouver.
Good Stuff! Love the new pix. Went flying yesterday, pic enroute. -Craig
wonder how ATC works for Ballons that close.....yell at each other?!?! LOL.
Great questions in Enroute too.
Thanks for the answer about the coffin corner. When I read fuel burn I had a brain fart moment. Thanks for straigtening me out. Which leads me to ask, if you were riding the tops in moderate to severe bumps, topped at FL350 and you got into a situation with a very tight corner and lower was no good due to weather, would you dump fuel to drop weight if it was bad enough?
CAT III Approach
KUDOS to the $130,000 raised!!!!!!
Nice work all! Your team kicked but, even a police department couldn't keep up.....must be all those layover workouts!!! :) Great job!
CAT III Approach
just a funny observation
the article states the race was walked or ran on an "inactive" runway....good thing!!
bet the times would have been cut in half or more on an ACTIVE one!! :):):):):):):)
tired from nights,
CAT III Approach
Hey there Captain(chick magnet) Doug.....and all your people and fans alike!!!!
What a colorful post....and all the money raised for your Credit Valley Hospital....to be admired!!!!!I will bet it was quite an experience...being on an actual runway....so cool!!!
But don't try and tell me, you didn't try on that "Yellow Wig"...in the "runway run" picture you posted here:))))))
bad enough they are probably adding a "Psych" ward to the hospital for those who were trama tized from the big black felt hat you doned!!!!! thats a joke....
but now I see your touring the world with that hat....OHHHH,thats not you.... thats a balloon...sorry....(*_*)eshhhhh
and Chris from St. John's....I hope to make it there to Newfoundland before tourist season is up....I've read end of Octoberish!!!!!!
and the question about the earth's rotation....ok here's a joke....
How many pilots does it take to screw in a light bulb????????
only ONE....the world revolves around them!
.....get it????....your are at least smirking...Right?????
ok to be fair.....you just been awarded "blond joke" brownie points to be spent at your leisure....lol
Serious....Thanks for everything you do...family, pilot, volunteer, teacher, It is appreciated....!!!!
and I'm not Sucking up to ya either.....!!!!!
miss(disclaimer):::::the before mentioned joke was not a personal attack or based on any real life actual events......ha ha)twa
Those balloons are awesome! Ocassionally I can see one here, but not that many! Good job on raising all that money Captain!
TA here in The Netherlands is 3,500ft! Pretty low :)
RE: Does the Earth's rotation affect the duration of flight.
First of all, great blog Captain!
Everything you said about inertial reference frames (the train) is true, but the fact that winds prevail from the West at Canadian latitudes is due to Coriolis force. And Coriolis acceleration is a result of the Earth's rotation.
So we can conclude that the Earth's rotation does affect the duration of flight!
Welcome and thanks. You make a great point, because Coriolis force affects winds and winds affect flight then yes, the earth's rotation DOES affect flight...indirectly. I knew someone would bring up the Coriolis effect. :)))
As you know, the question pertained to the earth rotating during flight. Many think because the earth is rotating under them, then flights
should be shorter or longer because of it. Not so.
Thanks for the visit.
Oh Captain Doug, we already know that's not you in the cockpit picture....that pilot has a nice "Watch" on.....
I'll let it go eventually....you know it's all in fun..and I am joking....maybe your not having fun.....who's fault is that....LOL
miss(always in trouble)twa
Getjets. You don't miss a thing...my comments, my pics and my double meanings.
Do you have some sort of inside info or is it that powerful woman intuition stuff? LOL
Like the pilot joke. :)
Here's another one..."what's the difference between God and a pilot?....God doesn't think he is a pilot." LOL
Thanks for your "lively" check in.
I suspect you have more than me smiling.
Captain Doug with a funny watch strap. :)))
CAT III Approach. Unfortunately, the "little" buses do not have fuel jettison capability. That's just for the BIG boys.
CAT III Approach. Good point about the runways. :)))
There sure was lots going on with runway 24 Right while we were running. But I was panting so hard
I couldn't concentrate on what was going on. LOL
Cedarglen. Got the pics. Maybe a post is in order? :))
BAS. Yes, I agree that pic was neat with all those balloons!
I went up in one in France when I was a couple of years older than you.
The ballon was tethered, but I will always remember the heat from the burners.
I should have stayed in Europe. LOL
Maybe I'll take a "leave" to learn french and drink cheap wine?
Actually, we are hiring big time so leaves are not being granted. Pity!
Your Welcome Captain....
NOPE...no "inside info"...besides I don't trust that stuff anyway....
and YEP it's all Powerful Woman's Intuition....a natural talent...
and my gift of (sometimes) humor....(due to a traumatic childhood)lol, sorta
which is a "single edge sword"...pointed in the wrong direction....usually...by my own hand....oh and the Big mouth came at no extra charge...
At least my cholestrol is low....due to rapid heartbeat(always in trouble....ha )so I die old...Yippie....
but with no friends....
I drink cheap wine....you don't have to move to France......
your joke was a good one....
besides humiliation is 'under rated'....gotta go now....
CAT III, Hope your getting some rest.....doesn't hurt to have those extra set of eyes....watching over the Captain....ha ha
go out and get one of those "Payday Loans" at 400% interest and buy a faux fake preshrunk watch strap....;))))))))) for christ's sake.....
so much to say, not enough victims...ha ha
6 hr thunder & lightning show last night.
Any texting capability between flight deck and ATC? Maybe easier to see ATC instructions, rather than hear them on radio during thunder...
Getjets...laughed my a## off about the watch comment...nice dig :)
There was indeed a lot happening on 24R during the Runway Run. She Who Must Be Obeyed and I got so distracted watching the steady stream of Airbuses, CRJs, Dash 8s and Embraers coming and going ... we actually stopped several times to take photos! Race? What race?
Perhaps it was enhanced by the cheap French wine we had the night before?
Foggy!!! :) :)
Oh! How wonderful!! ((hugs))
Wishing you the best...always!
Anon. I'll be posting a "want ad" later today.
If you read his blog you know what I'm talking about. :)
Craig R. Cheap red wine and airplanes...what else is there? Really! LOL
Yeah, I can think of another....food!
Okay, okay I can think of another, but that's a couple of blogs over. :)))
I had read it. :(
That "Want Ad" is a good idea.
Crossing fingers...and again--"Hi Foggy!"
I like putting faces to names. :)
Daniel. I saw you guys had a severe thunderstorm warning in effect. Kind of rare for you Halagonians. :)
Actually, we do have texting capability on the overseas flights. It's called CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Services).
But on the domestic side it's VHF all the way.
You should work for some innovative aviation think tank. :)))
Hello Mr. Foggy!!!! I just love the picture and the pose....perfect!!! you are as I pictured you.....and that is a good thing:)))))
Captain Doug,,you mentioned a couple of "blogs over...." one could retrieve information on the best things in life......
#2) Cheap Wine
#4)??????????#4 And #5) SLEEP OF COURSE
I am looking to complete my ___"TO DO"_____
list....and I only book 5 projects at a time.....where's that blog you referred to...?????????
I need the (#4)to complete my list!!!!! LOL
what are friends for.....ha ha
Did you hear they found a piece of the space shuttle "COLUMBIA"....that(burned up on re entry Feb 1, 2003)...
anyway it's a 4 foot section that provided water and power to the shuttle...(PRSD)
found in East Texas....because of the drought there.... the lake water had receded exposing the piece was found a day or two ago....NASA has confirmed...makes ya wonder what else.....may be....
Craig R....I hope you will post a couple of those runway pics of jets on your blog....love to see them....
MR CAT III....are you an ATC???. you don't have to answer....
did you noticed the FABULOUS WATCH....FOGGY HAS ON????????
Good luck with #4. I only wish others were adamant as you in fulfilling their "to do" list. LOL
Yes, I saw a newspaper clip about the exposed Shuttle section. Interesting stuff...but not as interesting as #4.
Best of luck with that "to do" list.
And yes I noticed the nice watch "Foggy" is wearing.
Captain Doug now googling for that "other" blog. LOL
Hey there Captain...quit your googling....
#4 is really #1....in sheeps clothing....lol
but I don't even claim to know what I'm talking about.....
I thought having #2 with #3 while talking about #1 will get you lots of #4 thus indirectly getting plenty of #5.
You see....I'm confused. No wonder #4 has been so illusive for me.
Speaking of which, I sure hope "number one" doesn't read this. LOL
Captain Doug and Getjets,
Sorry to interrupt your *ahem* Math lesson...just wanna say I like your avatar, Julie. What message did you want me to give Doug?
Oh ya...tell him "mine's bigger than yours" LOL
Anon. Something tells me you don't like math. :))))
Actually, I like Math. :)
Well I see I have a filthy azz mess to clean up here.....!!!!!!!
yes, I have a brand new crop of avitar's....and I picked this one first to showboat....hence mine is bigger than your little bus....
and to think I hated when anyone called your A319...or A320 a "little bus"....gotta go with the times....lol, then again lol
just can't see my avitar close enough to get the true "biggness" of it....
Heard it once, heard it a million times.....ha ha
let move on shall we....
Math....Captain Doug, you had it pegged....
while consumming #2 and #3....talking about #1....may add up to a #4.....and then plenty of #5 after all that.....AHEM.....
course we all know....#2(cheap wine)may actually get you more #2 then you ever bargained for.....YIKES....
I say throw the #'s in a hat....and pick one....thats where you start....
but Captain....you'r never getting a new sun-dried strap, if it's # 186 on your list....
If I am getting on your Air bus..and I see a "sawed off, freezed dryed, last hole, ice picked thru"....watch strap...KIDDING....
And in conclusion......I do want to Thank so much the gifts of my new pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and the lovely person who shared them with me.....:))))))
Captain Doug, #1 has nothing to fear.......all in fun....like they say about turning 50....IT'S JUST A NUMBER.....
are you still #1171 with Air Candada.....?????
got #2 in a glass....gotta start somewhere......
good nite my friends....(i think)
OMG!!! (tears of laughter)
...hilarious! Some of those zingers are priceless! What's worse--I think I actually took an ice pick to one of my belts once to make an extra hole!!! I died when you wrote that about his strap!!!
You are too much!!!! :))))
oh Anon....who hasn't had an ice pick....or a screwdriver...only to enhance our lives....thus giving us breathing room.....LOL
we should all be on the so called "NO FLY LIST"..... butt the underwear almost bomber.....never held an ice pick or any sharp object....think about it...you know the MF...never shaved in his life.....Alah only know what growing in that hive hanging on their face.....ok ...now I gotta go in hiding....LOL...bring it on.....
Captain Doug....you must be beddie bye.....or are you doing some shopping...oh Anon...I am so in trouble...
misstwa and proud of it
Getjets et al.
I'm out the door for a two day mission. First it's Montreal and then to Vancouver where it will be early afternoon and sunny when we arrive.
I may convince my F/O to go to the "Flying Beaver. It's a restaurant/bar co-located at a very busy float plane operation.
So there will be food, drink, planes and afterward plenty of rest. But as far as #4... think about the name... The flying "Beaver" .....LOL
Captain Doug with the last laugh this morning about #4!!!!!!!!! LOLOL
so if I read through all this...
you got a broken watch strap
a belt with extra holes punched in it
an ice pick
#4 ..... again think flying "Beaver"
is it just me, or do we have the makings of a Sharon Stone movie???
a tired from being up all night
CAT III Approach
@ CAT III--an excellent idea--a movie!
Who will play Captain Doug? Getjets?
Ha ha! I love it! :))
Did you see what happened at YYZ :O!

WAS the Flying Beaver 'cleared for departure'???....I THINK NOT....
who will play....????
Captain...while your out Galavanting at the Flying Beaver....what....lets just say for instance....
being a chick magnet.....
a "flying Beaver" patron...asks..."Sir, "WHAT TIME IS IT..."....THE HORROR...
You'll be at the flea market tomorrow won't ya..???? or QVC...
look I know this has gone on too long....and hey I am feeeling the pain....my "scrolling finger" is killing me from getting to the bottom of these comments....
just buy a the damn watch strap....
Julie if you PUSH the scroll-wheel and drag the mouse down at the same time it's a lot easier :P Unless you're still holding the mouse with two hands of course... :P
Bas...I am puttin your happy Arse on my payroll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...lol
