What is XIX in Roman Numerals?
XIX in Roman numerals equals the number 19.
To work this equation out, we need to first learn and understand that:
- X = 10
- I = 1
We also need to know about the subtractive principle, where a smaller number is subtracted from a larger one if the smaller number is written before the larger one. Find out more about this on our Roman numerals page.
Why Does XIX Equal The Number 19?
In the case of the equation XIX, the I (1) is written before the second X (10), which means that the smaller number needs to be subtracted from the larger one.
This therefore gives us the math equation of:
X (10) plus X (10) minus I (1) which equals 19.
If the I had been written after the second X, then it would need to be added to it. This means that XXI is equal to X (10) plus X (10) plus I (1) = 21.
Math Questions Containing the Roman Numerals XIX
Have a go at working out the answers to some math problems below involving the Roman numeral XIX.
1. What is LVI plus XIX?
To solve this, we first need to work out what number the Roman numeral LVI is equivalent to.
As each letter represents a number that is smaller than the one which precedes it, then all we need to do is add them together (i.e. we do not need to minus any using the subtractive principle).
LVI is simply L (50) plus V (5) plus I (1). This means that the Roman numeral LVI equals the number 56.
Now that we know this, we can just take the number 56 and add it to 19 (XIX), which gives us the answer of 75 (or LXXV in Roman numerals).
2. What is XIX minus IX?
This sum should be fairly easy to work out the answer to, as the numeral IX has already been worked out when we translated XIX at the top of the page!
For IX, the I (1) needs to be subtracted from the X (10). This means that the Roman numeral IX is the equivalent of the number 9.
All we need to do now is take XIX (19) and take off IX (9), giving us the answer of 10, which we know is represented by the letter X in the Roman numbering system.
3. What is XXIV multiplied by XIX?
Again, to work this sum out we have to first convert the Roman numeral XXIV into a number.
We known that X = 10, I = 1 and V = 5, and that because the I (1) is written before the V (5) then 1 needs to be subtracted from 5.
This means that XXIV is X (10) plus X (10) plus V (5) minus I (1) , so XXIV equals 24.
Now that we know this, we just multiply 24 by XIX (19), which gives us the answer of 456 (or CDLVI in Roman numerals).
4. What is CCCXCIX divided by XIX?
CCCXCIX is perhaps one of the most complicated Roman numerals that you will ever have to convert!
Not only is it quite long, being comprised of seven letters, but it also requires the subtraction principle to be used twice towards the end too!
To convert it into a number, we just need to break it down and take it piece by piece.
C is equal to the number 100. As there are three of them, we add them together to get 300, which is our starting number.
Next, we see that X is written before C, which means we need to take X (10) away from C (100), which give us 90, and means that now we have the number 390.
Lastly, because I (1) is written before X (10), we need to subtract 1 from 10, which is 9, and gives us the last number of our equation, which can now be stated as 399.
Now that we have worked out that CCCXCIX is the number 399, we can divide this by XIX (19) to reach our answer, which is 21 (or XXI in Roman numerals).
As you can see from the example in question four above, the longer Roman numerals that also feature one or more subtractions in them can at first glance appear horribly complicated.
But if you break them down and take them in small sections, they are much easier to work out.
